Election Time

Yesterday was the United Kingdom general election which to us meant an end to the bombardment on TV of political adverts and interviews with unknown MPs from small corners of the country. The weird thing is not many people can be bothered voting (only 50%) which is kind of strange given the situation of the country. The schools and health system are going down the toilet and the armed forces are embroiled in Iraq yet most people could not care less. I have not actually meet anyone who has voted yet which is slightly disappointing. I think a big part of it could be the scheduling of an election on a Thursday but I guess they could not do it on the weekend as that would conflict with the non-stop soccer.

The results came in this morning and Labour retained power. I think this was a good thing given the Conservatives planned on slashing taxes and increasing public spending at the same time (how you do that without going into debt or printing more money no-one could understand). The Liberal Democrats did not do too badly but they suffered in the polls as their leaders child is not eligible to vote (being only a few weeks old). Tony on the other hand proudly lined up his mob of children all of voting age and made a killing. The results were a little strange though, although Labour only received 35% of the vote they took 55% of the seats which just does not add up to someone used to thinking in a Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) democracy. At least however the British seem to be able to count unlike people in Florida.

The election is over, spring is here and its forecast to be warmer than 20oC next week!

The good news is all that political stuff is now history and the TV will be free to once again go back to broadcasting hundreds of reality shows, Eastenders, soccer and snooker. Emma loves the cleaning shows whilst I am impressed by the snooker. No-one seems to watch Eastenders but just like the Labour party it still seems to rank highest in all the polls...
