Border Manager Authentication with Linux

Getting a Linux server or workstation to work nicely with Novell's Border Manager can be very difficult. Novell have recently brought out a Linux version of their clntrust.exe application for Linux workstations (available in Border Manager 3.8 SP4) but this requires Gnome and the Novell Linux Client. If you are running a server (or use a non-Novell supported Linux distro) meeting these requirements can be difficult. Fortunately there is cl4others which authenticates to the Border Manager through simple command line instructions in a far more flexible manner. Documentation for cl4others is pretty sparse so I have written this little tutorial on how to get it set up and running.

Novell to Port Evolution & Beagle to Windows

Nat Friedman has reported in his blog that Novell will be porting Beagle and eventually Evolution to Windows. This is good news for supporters of Open Source transition.

It is difficult to migrate a company bootlaces and all to Linux due to the sheer number of changes required in the daily workflow. The minialisation of this change through gradual introduction and migration of applications such as OpenOffice and Evolution should eventually see increased uptake of Linux in the desktop environment.

Potentially good news on the Linux Client front

The following article from Linux World Australia is interesting:
Why Netware Client For Linux Isn't Shipping With Novell Linux Desktop

If what is talked about is true a Linux client for Novell maybe on the market sooner rather than later. Introduction of such a client would be massively useful in implenting Linux in the general desktop environment.
