However, like children learning about gravity the hard way, those starting out with 3D do not have the same appreciation for these boundaries. Consequently the most challenging part about teaching students how to create effective 3D models and renderings is not the creation of geometric data, it is getting them to stop. The problem is once introduced to the concept of CAD, (or more recently BIM) students have an uncontrollable urge to model every screw and light-fitting. No matter whether this was five years ago on a Pentium 3 or today with a Core2 Duo, students will do their best to overload the available hardware through simple, blissful ignorance.&lt;/p&gt;

As a result the challenge facing Autodesk is not just to store the underlying data in the cloud, but also the entire, 3-dimensionally realised model so that it can be efficiently navigated, manipulated and simulated.&lt;/p&gt;

Overall John is more than pleased with the result, especially considering instead of a large upfront expense his account was billed as he chose to use the services on offer. He could see that even though the practice was not going to migrate from Microstation anytime soon, they were going to use Autodesk&#039;s online services more often in the future.&lt;/p&gt;

For your money you get &lt;a href=&quot;https://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/editions.html&quot;&gt;quite a few more features&lt;/a&gt;: 10gig of storage per user, some interesting looking API&#039;s and a guarantee of 99.9% uptime with support.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On the whole deal is pretty good but Google has gone out of their way to stress that this service is targeted at the significant portion of employees who do not actually have email accounts on the basis that it is too expensive for the business to maintain them internally. Aiming at this market is a good strategy considering Google Apps lacks one significant feature that will see it struggle to gain acceptance in the majority of businesses where staff email is an entrenched and essential service: &lt;strong&gt;offline access&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;!--break--&gt;Offline access from a businesses perspective is not a question of whether the computer is connected to an internal network but whether this internal network can access to the Internet. This internal network is generally very reliable but Internet access will never be 100% reliable due to its inherit complexities. Consequently whilst network administrators can comfortably guarantee their bosses that the internal network will function during business hours they cannot provide the same assurance with the Internet, especially considering many factors are beyond their control. From a business perspective this is an important issue because even when the Internet is not accessible employees need to be digitally productive. To do so they need to reliably achieve three basic tasks:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;Send messages&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Receive messages&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Review old messages&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p&gt;In a GMail-centric environment if the Internet fails none of these primary tasks can be undertaken. In an internally hosted email environment employees are still able to review and compose new messages for sending as soon as Internet access is restored. The problem with this solution is that it dictates the client-side software requirements. From a deployment and maintenance perspective the solution would be more efficient because administrators would be focused on one central service instead of troubleshooting issues at the Internet browser level.   &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; The Local Data Proxy would be a local cache of some or all user data. The exact size of this cache would depend on the rules established by the system administrator and resources available. For example it could be set to cache all managerial level data and only emails sent to staff in the last week. Along with data the service would also cache offline versions of the Google Apps family and act as an SMTP relay. This would allow employees to use the productivity applications in an offline state almost oblivious to the fact the Internet is not available. Once Internet access is restored or reaches acceptable levels Local Data Proxy would synchronise all data changes back to the Google cloud and relay sent mail. From the users perspective nothing much would change apart from the fact they would regain access to all of their data and not be limited to a recent subset.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A setup such as this would not provide offline access to those people working outside the office network. Such an approach would also require the maintenance of an internal proxy service and the Google Local Data Proxy. This is a small price to pay especially considering most businesses already maintain an internal server infrastructure. Even with these shortcomings in mind such a service would still go a long way to solving many of the offline access issues posed without resorting to client-side, browser specific solutions.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;

 <title>Software as a Service - myths destroyed</title>

    &lt;p&gt;Recently I have been giving a lot of thought to the Software as a Service concept. The basic idea behind this catch phrase is that rather than paying a lot of money up front for a piece of software and/or server combination you subscribe to the software online and have it hosted remotely. There&#039;s obviously a couple of concerns over such a model, firstly you have got to trust that these companies do not go out of business plus you have to be confident that your Internet connection (and theirs) will be working whenever you need the service. A lot of these myths have been put to rest as this &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/apr2006/tc20060417_996365.htm?campaign_id=bier_tca&quot;&gt;Business Week article illustrates&lt;/a&gt;, but for hard-core (old school) network administrators the idea of out-sourcing essential software sends cold shivers down their spines.    &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The concept really got stuck in my head when a friend of mine sent a general email asking for people to help him convince a small business to purchase a general purpose (mail/calendar/file/print) server. After having my share of bad server experiences and over demanding clients I eventually came to the conclusion that installing a new server in a small/medium business is a really difficult thing to justify when pitted against the new Software as a Service model. For example if you were to sign-up for the &lt;a href=&quot;https://www.google.com/hosted/&quot;&gt;GMail hosted email service&lt;/a&gt; (where they host your email domain) you get &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.google.com/mail&quot;&gt;email&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.google.com/calendar&quot;&gt;calendar&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.google.com/talk&quot;&gt;instant messaging&lt;/a&gt; services all for just a few only slightly annoying adverts. Alternatively you could go the &lt;a href=&quot;http://officelive.microsoft.com/&quot;&gt;Microsoft Office Live&lt;/a&gt; path which does not provide as much storage space and costs more but could get very interesting as these services are integrated into the traditional Office suite. For data there are some pretty interesting looking &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1953565,00.asp&quot;&gt;NAS (Network Attached Service) devices&lt;/a&gt; available that provide local network storage without the hassle of running a full blown server. Then as long as you purchase decent network-enabled printers you have a complete small/medium office solution for a lot less setup and ongoing support costs than a conventional Linux/Windows/Netware server.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;From a network administrator&#039;s perspective this model is at first scary (on one likes being out of a job) until you realise that you can now spend your time working with users to get these services working for them rather than just simply working, which is their current (and only) ongoing concern.    &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;/div&gt;

I have signed up for an account and read through the documentation and some of the features are pretty nice (access control lists, time sensitive url&#039;s and a lot more). It would be great to be able to harness to a massively scalable disk and database array with guaranteed uptime and almost unlimited scalability without having to spend thousands (or even millions) of dollars on server hardware and support. This type of setup would be really exciting and would benefit almost everyone involved (except for out of work server support staff).  <title>Microsoft Office Live = Low cost web collaboration?</title>

With the product Microsoft appears to be aiming its big guns at &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.salesforce.com&quot;&gt;SalesForce.com&lt;/a&gt; rather than Google&#039;s GMail, GTalk and rumoured calendar products. It is also a push to provide extra value within the Office lineup now that free software like OpenOffice are generating serious competition in their bread and butter, writing, counting and presenting marketspace. Microsoft Monitor has a good article about what &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.microsoftmonitor.com/archives/013785.html&quot;&gt;Office Live is not&lt;/a&gt; which is probably more helpful than the stuff that comes out of Microsoft PR.  &lt;p&gt;Regardless of how it is adopted worldwide it would appear to be a very good value proposition to New Zealand businesses. Currently vanilla hosting (web/email) are relatively expensive and for decent web/email/collaboration services it is easier (and often cheaper) to host things internally. If Microsoft can introduce these services within New Zealand at the same cost as advertised in the U.S. it should hopefully cause a shakeup within the local pricing structure. $50-$60 per month for email, web and basic collaboration services is extremely good value especially if Microsoft can integrate these online services with their desktop bretherin (which they will no doubt do). Another important concern for any business will be the backup/redundancy services offered. At this point it is unclear if this data can be easily backed up locally in a relatively open format (not encrypted Office Live only files).    &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;It wil be interesting to see more in-depth reviews appear as the Beta-test invitations get sent out. &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/02/15/microsoft-office-live-goes-into-beta/&quot;&gt;Michael Arrington from TechCrunch&lt;/a&gt; has been behind the scenes at Readmond and certainly liked what he saw (much to Steve Gillmor&#039;s disgust). I am certainly interested in the collaboration features that get included in Office Live but more importantly how these features are integrated into future versions of Office and Windows itself (much like Apple is doing with .Mac).    &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The release of this coincided with an interesting Gillmor Daily (&lt;a href=&quot;http://gillmordaily.podshow.com/?p=30&quot;&gt;ODBC Part I&lt;/a&gt;) where the participants debated the future of IT within businesses and whether or not most services (like email and databases) would eventually be hosted elsewhere on the Net. The analogy of electricity was used as an example: no business generates their own electricity or maintains an electrician on staff to deal with major breakages. Rather all of these essential services are subscribed to or contracted in, leaving the business to focus its attention and resources on core business opportunities. Whether or not this becomes a reality is unclear but definitely in New Zealand the pricing, availability and quality of Internet access will need to significantly improve before such a dream becomes a reality.    &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;   &lt;/div&gt;
